General Info
Join us on select Fridays after school at the Seattle Chess Club for competitive chess for mid-grade and middle school players! Rounds begin at 4pm and end at 6pm. All chess players (K-adult) are invited to attend the Open tournament, and schools are invited to register squads of players (4-8th grade) at the start of each season.
The Middle School Chess League occurs over the school year and includes both Team and Open play. Matches occur approximately once a month. Team play is for students in mid-grades (4-6) and middle school (5-8). Open play is for K-adult players.
Teams from area schools bring one or two 4-person squads. Each player is assigned a board based on their NWRS rating, with board 1 going to the top rated player on the squad. Squads are paired against eachother, with board 1 playing board 1, board 2 playing board 2, etc.
One NWRS G/60 time control game is played at each match. Each win equals one point and each draw equals 1/2 point - if a squad wins more than 2 points it wins the match. The squad with the most match points becomes MS Chess League Champion.
An Open tournament runs alongside the team play at each match. Open games are also G/60 time control, and NWRS rated. Players are matched as evenly as possible, using NWRS ratings. At the end of the season, we'll have a celebratory gathering and recognize most wins, most attendance, and biggest upset. Come play chess!
